The Three Peaks Challenge in the Yorkshire Dales is no ordinary hike. It’s a 24-mile circular route that takes in Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough — the highest peaks in the Dales — with a time target of under 12 hours. Sounds intense? It is. But for many, that’s the appeal.

Starting and finishing in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the route is a test of endurance, but it’s also a way to see the landscape at its most dramatic. You’ll cross limestone pavements, pass viaducts, and traverse windswept moors. It’s not just about fitness — it’s about grit, navigation, and weather-watching.

There’s no official body governing the challenge, but the Pen-y-ghent Café acts as a sort of basecamp. You can sign in before you set off, and check your time when you return — a tradition going back decades.

If you’re planning to take it on, bring layers, good boots, a head for heights, and ideally, a friend with snacks. And whether you finish in 11 hours or 14, you’ll come back changed — with sore legs, yes, but also a head full of wide skies and memories of three ancient giants.
